Part 3 of the Impact Explosion Tutorial
This tutorial is meant to show you how to create some special effects using Bryce preset materials. These instructions can be used for not only this Torpedo, but for engine glow, a laser, and even a light saber. Use the techniques here to make any glowing object that you want to make.
| Deselect all objects and go to Solo Mode. | |
| Create a cone and resize it so that it's about 10 times longer that it is round. | ![]() |
| Create a sphere. Elongate it slightly and position it so that it is at the wider tip of the cone. | ![]() |
| Select both objects and group them by selecting the "G". | ![]() |
| With the Group selected select the "M" and go to the material editor. | |
| Here we will paint the torpedo. | ![]() |

Once back into the material editor you will need to
change a few things.
|

To prevent unnecessary shadows, we need to turn of
all shadow casting for these objects.
|

| Once out back to the main window, duplicate the group. | ![]() |
| Resize it slightly by dragging the resize control. | ![]() |
| Position it so that the rounded ends are pretty close to the same position. | ![]() |
| Select the "M" for this second group to go to the Material Editor. | |
This will add to the glow effect. |

The Result |
In this example there are several rough edges. However, you should keep in mind that we are making a larger scene. In the actual explosion, much of what we have done will be hidden, so there is no need for extreme detail in this step.
Also this is not meant to be an all inclusive instruction on every possible way to have made the final image or produce the desired results. Bryce offers zillions of wonderful ways to replicate, multireplicate, reposition, etc. in its powerful interface. Experiment!
