Part 3 of the Impact Explosion Tutorial

This tutorial is meant to show you how to create some special effects using Bryce preset materials. These instructions can be used for not only this Torpedo, but for engine glow, a laser,  and even a light saber.  Use the techniques here to make any glowing object that you want to make.

Prepare the Torpedo Paint the Torpedo Increase the Glow

Prepare the Torpedo
Deselect all objects and go to Solo Mode.
Create a cone and resize it so that it's about 10 times longer that it is round.
Create a sphere. Elongate it slightly and position it so that it is at the wider tip of the cone.
Select both objects and group them by selecting the "G".

Paint the Torpedo
With the Group selected select the "M" and go to the material editor.
Here we will paint the torpedo.
  1. Go to the Preset Material Library.
  2. Select Complex fx from it
  3. Then choose the Green Lit texture from the presets and select ok.
Once back into the material editor you will need to change a few things.
  1. Change the Diffuse color to White by clicking the color button and selecting white.
  2. Change the Ambient color to White by clicking the color button and selecting white.
  3. Change the Volume color to White by clicking the color button and selecting white.
  4. Drag the Diffusion control to 100.
  5. Drag the Ambience control to 100.
To prevent unnecessary shadows, we need to turn of all shadow casting for these objects.
  1. Go to the objects material properties.
  2. Uncheck Cast Shadows
  3. Uncheck Receive Shadows
  4. Select OK.

Increase the Glow
Once out back to the main window, duplicate the group.
Resize it slightly by dragging the resize control.
Position it so that the rounded ends are pretty close to the same position.
Select the "M" for this second group to go to the Material Editor.
  1. Decrease the Ambience
  2. Decrease the Diffusion.

This will add to the glow effect.

  • Once done, select both torpedo groups and group them.
  • Name this compound group something meaningful. I called it Torpedo1.
  • Exit Solo Mode.
  • Reposition and resize this group so that it intersects one of the targets you set in part 2.
  • Duplicate the torpedo group and position the duplicate so that it intersects the other target.

The Result

Go to part 4 of the "Impact Explosion" Tutorial.

Site Note:

In this example there are several rough edges.  However, you should keep in mind that we are making a larger scene.  In the actual explosion, much of what we have done will be hidden, so there is no need for extreme detail in this step.

Also this is not meant to be an all inclusive instruction on every possible way to have made the final image or produce the desired results.   Bryce offers zillions of wonderful ways to replicate, multireplicate, reposition, etc.  in its powerful interface. Experiment!
