Brycetech: Bryce on the Mat Part 12

Step by step texturing

To complete this portion of the tutorial, first you must download the models.  Once downloaded, close the new window, unzip the files with a program (such as winzip) and continue.

In this part of the tutorial, you will go step-by-step through the texturing of several objects to get some practical experience in the Material Lab and see most of the different menus available in it.
First we will start with the desk.  After you have downloaded the desk, change the view of your Bryce window so that you are looking at the front of the desk.  In this case, I had to look at it "From Right" to see the desk front.

Be sure you smooth all of your imported objects.

Looking at the desk with this camera, removes all of the perspective in the Bryce window.

Ungroup the dxf file by clicking the "U".
Now that the object is ungrouped, it's necessary to get to the parts of the desk that we want to texture.  In this case, we want to get to the brass handles on the front of the desk.
There are a number of ways to get to them, but probably the fastest is to draw a marquee around the areas that aren't part of the handles...

Hold down the "Shift" key while drawing your marquees, this will ensure that the selections keep adding together.

...select inverse...
...then go to solo mode.
Once here, deselect all and repeat the process above.
Then quickly exit and re-enter solo mode.
Eventually, you will work your way into having only the handles left.
Once you have these selected, do two things. First change the family colors of the handles so that they will be visible in wireframe.

I changed them to red.

Second group them and name them something meaningful.  I will call them "handles".

Now not only can you see the handles in wireframe, you have two different means of selecting them easily: by the group name and by the family color.

Let's paint these things while we have them selected.  The quick way to paint them is to enter the Material Lab while all of them are selected.  Once in the Material Lab, select the button indicated to the right.
This will take you into the preset materials library.  Once here select the "yellow gold" preset from the "simple and fast" menu.
After clicking ok, you will return to the Material Lab.  Once here, change the metallicity of the object to 100 by dragging the slider.  This will change the appearance of the gold to a brass appearance as the diffuse color is added into the reflection.

This is not meant to be an all inclusive instruction on every possible way to have made the final image or produce the desired results.  Bryce offers zillions of wonderful ways to replicate, multireplicate, reposition, etc.  in its powerful interface. Experiment!
